The Obi Kimono We Made Once and Will Never Make Exactly Again
There is a category of object that exists outside the logic of production.
Not made in a run. Not repeatable. Not available in multiple colourways or the option to order more when the first one sells. Simply: made once, from material that existed once, by hands that took a long time to learn how.
The Meow handmade vintage obi kimono is this kind of object.
What an Obi Is
The obi is the wide sash worn around the waist of a kimono. In formal dress, it is often the most visually significant element of the entire garment — wider than the eye expects, elaborately constructed, and in the case of the most precious examples, woven from silk on Nishijin looms in Kyoto using techniques that take years to master.
Vintage obi fabric from performance kimonos carries a specific quality that contemporary fabric cannot replicate: the weight of use, the particular softness that comes from decades of careful wear and careful storage, the exact tonality of dye that was produced before synthetic processes homogenised colour. These are physical properties that cannot be manufactured. They can only be inherited.
How These Pieces Are Made
Each Meow obi kimono begins with a piece of vintage fabric sourced from historic performance garments. The fabric is examined for structural integrity, cleaned with the care that any textile of this age requires, and then cut and constructed by hand into the kimono silhouette.
No two pieces use the same fabric. No two pieces are the same. The pattern placement on each one is determined by the fabric itself — where the weave is strongest, where the colour is most present, where the motif sits most naturally within the new garment's proportions.
The result is a piece that is simultaneously a contemporary garment and an artefact. Something you can wear and something a collector would recognise.
Who This Is For
The woman who buys one of these pieces is not buying swimwear. She is acquiring something with genuine provenance — a garment whose fabric has a history that predates its current form and will outlast its current owner.
She is the kind of person who understands the difference between beautiful and meaningful. Who knows that the most considered thing in a wardrobe is often the piece that cannot be replaced.
There are very few of these. When this fabric is gone, it is gone.
